Nick and I drove 570 miles yesterday. We literally crossed the whole states of Massachusetts and New York. We stopped to witness one of the wonder of the world, Niagra Falls. Which I’ll be honest, it was exactly what I was expecting but not as awe inspiring as I would have liked.
We spent a balmy 80 degree October night in Buffalo New York. I got us a last minute Air B&B for $100 after all tax and fees. Not a bad price for a private apartment in a cute little neighborhood, walking distance to a few bars and shops. Cities and the people who live in them always fascinate me. How can anyone stand to never have a moment completely to themselves? To not be able to look up and see the stars? Not to mention that I have never felt completely safe in a city environment, I was born and raised country.
Our night here was a bit of a blur, and alcohol wasn’t even heavily involved! Driving always makes me a special kind of exhausted. It’s frustrating because I’m excited and I want to explore but sometimes my body just gives up on me. We did manage to go out for a few beers and appetizers, had a good little chat with our bartender about the way of life here.
In the morning we find ourselves in a cafe called Ashker’s. The outside was unassuming. A dingy awning presented the name and covered a few battered wooden tables and chairs. I was a little skeptical until I stepped inside. The menu looks like my kind of thing – fresh smoothies and juices, lattes made with espresso pulled from a single shot machine and cheap prices. The space itself has the vibe of a house I lived in college. The wooden floors are scuffed and loved and there are old refurnished desks for customer’s to place their lap tops on.
I knew this place was a winner upon opening the door. Nick is skeptical until we try the food. And I’m pleased to announce that the quality is there as well. The latte we had was the best I’ve had since I swear the last time I was home in Michigan. Baristas seem so uneducated about how to pull the best espresso shot. But! I could go on about that topic for a whole other blog post. Ashker’s is a place that focuses on healthful foods and to me that’s always a great way to start the day.
My Uncle is not expecting us until tomorrow and tonight is for us. We are at a loss of what to do. It’s a challenge for me to adapt from my scheduled life into this complete freedom. I am holding myself back and I do not know what will release me. It’s only the second day into our adventure, I’m hoping the realization will hit me soon.
